Fraud schemes are becoming more sophisticated and more costly, especially for seniors.

Adults 60 and older reported losing $3.4 billion in 2023 — an 11% increase from the previous year — according to statistics from the FBI. That amounts to an average loss of $33,915 per victim.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes will be stopping by Maricopa later this month to discuss that very issue with the city’s seniors.

Mayes will host a town hall at Maricopa City Hall on Friday, Feb. 27, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event will cover some of the latest scams targeting Arizona seniors and will also give locals an opportunity to share their concerns.

Her visit was requested by Vice Mayor Vincent Manfredi.

Manfredi said during last week’s council meeting that he reached out to Mayes after seeing a similar event she held in Apache Junction last year.

“The reason I did it, and I don’t want to say it, but I know someone that lost $5,000 on a phone call … The bank said, ‘There’s nothing we can do. You gave them your information. You gave them everything.’ And so, they finally got a couple dollars back from the bank, but it’s a serious thing,” he said during the meeting.

Mayes has been holding the town hall events across the state for the past year, including stops in Saddlebrooke, Sun City, Florence and Douglas.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Maricopa City Hall. For more information or to RSVP, visit the attorney general’s website.

    1. Annnnnnnd comments like this speak to TAB’s character….

Yes, TAB, you should absolutely use this well-written article about a positive bipartisan collaboration to help people as a platform to promote your batshit crazy conspiracy theories and election denialism whilst simultaneously ignoring the fact that you are clearly a member of the affected age demographic.

Don’t think twice. Just do what the AI YouTube video tells you to… atta boy…. No, I don’t want a Werther’s Original, thanks anyway…that thing looks like it’s been in your pocket since the 80’s…

  1. I applaud Vice Mayor Manfredi (R) for putting petty bipartisan politics aside in order to provide a helpful service to an at-risk segment of our population. Actions like this speak to his character. He continues to show himself to be a class act.

Of course, he may not want a ringing endorsement from BKM3992… which would be totally fair…

    “Go away…. Stop helping…. Shut up…. “ 😄
