Backyard shooter learns tough lesson on lying to cops: report

Gunshots in Tortosa led to the arrest of one man Monday.

Maricopa Police Department officers responded to reported gunfire at a home on San Alvarez Avenue just after 11 a.m., according to a probable cause statement obtained by InMaricopa.

Responding officers knocked on the door and when Arturo Escobar, 57, answered, they informed him that they had received a call that shots were fired from his property.

Escobar denied firing a gun and gave the officers permission to search his property. During that search, police reported finding a handgun, ammunition and spent shell casings in the backyard.

A next-door neighbor turned over surveillance footage that “clearly depicted [Escobar] discharging a firearm in the backyard of his residence” to the authorities, according to the police document.

It was not disclosed whether Escobar allegedly fired the gun into the air, the ground or a structure. InMaricopa has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for the surveillance footage.

Officers arrested Escobar, who waived his rights and further declined to comment. He was booked into the Pinal County jail on charges of illegally firing a gun and disorderly conduct.

If convicted on those charges, he could face nearly five years in prison.
