A large-scale U-Haul project on 10 acres in Maricopa is heading for city approval.

Structures totaling 25,372 square feet are proposed for the site on West Honeycutt Road near North Jericho Road.

An access road leading to a postal facility near the site will remain for U-Haul’s use, bisecting the new development.

In his annual building report, City Manager Rick Horst said the two-story structures would include regional corporate office space for U-Haul employees.

The development includes retail space, storage unit space and a rental facility, said Rudy Lopez, City of Maricopa director of development services.

Lopez said the proposal will get final approval once the developer resubmits for a third city review. Final approval would come after the third review is complete, he said.

Paul Jones, a contractor on the project, said Wednesday he was ready to start construction.

A construction office trailer is already on the graded site.

“Any day, any month at this point,” Jones said when asked about a construction date.  “It’s up to the city to approve the final plans.”

Attempts to contact U-Haul’s media relations office were unsuccessful.
