Want to help solve a local crime and earn 1,000 smackaroos in the process? If you can find the “hidden thieves of Hidden Valley,” says the crime victim, the bounty is yours.
A two-man heist crew in the wee hours yesterday morning syphoned more than 400 gallons of diesel fuel from the gas pumps at Farmers Convenience Store, 49301 W. Papago Road.
Owner and Maricopa resident Jack Sulaiman said security footage caught a black Cadillac Escalade and a white Dodge Ram utility truck driving up to the Hidden Valley fuel pumps around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.
It appeared the thieves used 9-volt batteries to “short the wires and open up the dispenser” before spending nearly an hour and a half hemorrhaging gasoline into a large fuel tank in the truck, he told InMaricopa today.
“They stole like $1,600 worth of diesel, about 400 gallons,” he said.
That’s not the only hit the convenience store and its attached restaurant, which Sulaiman reopened recently in honor of his late father, took that night.
Because the thieves broke locks and damaged wiring on the fuel pumps, Sulaiman estimated the repair could cost him about $1,500.
That is why Sulaiman is hoping to entice the community to help identify the suspects with a $1,000 reward. It’s strictly a matter of principle, he said.
“I don’t like being stolen from,” he said. “We bust our asses day in and day out, we don’t steal from the community. We do our best and work on thin margins so that we can provide for the community.”
