Butterfield Elementary School has been recognized as an award winner in the annual D-Backs School Challenge, a program run by the Arizona Diamondbacks’ charitable foundation and University of Phoenix since 2012.

On May 9, faculty members from Butterfield lined up on Chase Field before the Diamondbacks game against the Miami Marlins, to receive their $5,000 award that will go to purchasing robots and computer hardware supplies for the Coding and Robotics for Girls club.

The club is aimed at empowering girls to learn computer science, offering inspiration for the next generation of young women.

Kim Alvin De Lara, the club’s sponsor, is thrilled about the grant, which will provide much-needed equipment.

“From programming robots to creating digital games, our elementary school girls will discover and explore interesting and creative ways to become passionate about computer science,” he said.

The School Challenge provides grants for specific needs at local public, private and nonprofit charter schools for kindergarten through 12th grade students to improve education across Arizona.

On behalf of the Diamondbacks, a big thank you was extended to all the dedicated educators who work tirelessly to provide the best possible education for their students.
