California man’s arrest is a moving story — literally

Call it grand theft U-Haul.

Maricopa police were alerted through a Flock license plate-reading camera that a U-Haul GMC SAV van had been spotted, identified as stolen out of California and was driving around Maricopa.

That led to the arrest of Aaron R. Jones, age not reported, on Thursday afternoon at John Wayne Parkway and Lakeview Drive. Cops charged him with auto theft and booked him into the Pinal County jail.

The felony charge carries prison time of up to nine years.

A Maricopa patrol officer said he was dispatched to track down the U-Haul and spotted a vehicle matching the description “drive past me going northbound on North John Wayne Parkway from North Alterra Parkway.”

The officer said Jones was stopped and removed from the vehicle. He was the only person in the vehicle.

The officer said Jones told him he rented the vehicle in California and he was moving to Arizona.

“Aaron did not have the documentation with him to prove he rented the vehicle, nor did he have any documentation showing when he would be returning the vehicle,” an MPD probable cause statement reports.

An assisting officer confirmed the VIN number on the vehicle matched the vehicle reported stolen, the report states.
