Arizona’s most prominent tree sculptor has made Maricopa its very own tree sculpture.
Officials will “unveil” the newest addition to the city’s public art installations in front of City Hall tomorrow.
The unveiling is mostly performative, as the brass and copper sculpture has been completed and “planted” Monday at the spot where the fountain once sat. A social media post said the sculpture honors “the beauty and heritage” of Maricopa as dedication the pecan groves that once flourished in the city.
The sculpture cost the city an estimated $15,000, according to Councilmember Vincent Manfredi. He said members of the city’s Community Enrichment Department did not specify how the public art installation was funded.
The installation does not appear in the city’s current capital improvement plans.
A representative from the department did not immediately respond to a request to confirm the cost or how the installation was funded.
The sculpture was created by Surprise-based artist Joe Tyler, who has produced and installed similar art in other cities around the state. This includes a massive metal sculpture called “Grace Tree” at Grand Canyon University and “The Learning Tree” outside Oro Valley’s public library.
He dubbed this one “Agrarian Roots.”
“Without agriculture, there’d be no Maricopa,” he said.
Tyler said the sculpture sits about 15 feet tall, has 4,812 leaves individually welded to the branches and he believed the city wants to light it at night.
“When the light hits it, all that brass and copper emulates the fall color look of the pecan tree,” he said.
As for the cost, Tyler said he did his best to give the city a “very big bang for their buck.”
The dedication will occur at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Vincent Manfredi is an owner of InMaricopa.
