Clean streak: Maricopa restaurants keep the ‘excellent’ coming

Yummy Noodles, Native Grill & Wings and Subway received favorable health inspections in April. [Bryan Mordt]

In the mood for hot pots or loaded tots? Either way, you’re in for a clean spot. Food inspectors served a ramen shop and a sports bar “excellent” ratings last week on a brief tour of five Maricopa businesses.

Pinal County Health Department inspectors first visited Bashas’ sushi bar and deli April 8, where they found no violations and rated them separately as “excellent.” It was the fifth perfect rating in a row for the deli and eighth for the sushi bar. The operator is Phoenix-based Advanced Fresh Concepts Sushi.

Two days later, the inspectors visited Yummy Noodles and found no problems. It was the restaurant’s third ever inspection, and second-straight flawless visit.

Native Grill & Wings also received an “excellent” rating for the second time in a row on April 10. Finally, Subway got that same rating for the fifth consecutive time, although the shredded cheese was one degree warmer than required.

What do the ratings mean?

Excellent: All priority standards are observed as compliant.

Satisfactory: One or more priority standards is out of compliance. All priority standards are corrected at the time of inspection.

Needs improvement: One or more priority standards is out of compliance. At least one violation is not corrected at the time of inspection. When violations are corrected to the satisfaction of the department during a follow-up inspection, a satisfactory rating will be given.

Unacceptable: One or more violations observed are an “imminent health hazard.” Hazards include the misuse of poisonous or toxic materials, onset of an apparent foodborne illness outbreak and unsanitary conditions that may endanger public health. Hazards can stem from fires, floods, electrical or water problems, and sewage backup. When violations are corrected to the satisfaction of the department during a follow-up inspection, a satisfactory rating will be given.
