Maricopa City Council members on Tuesday night accepted the resignation of City Councilmember Rich Vitiello, who is running or District 1 Pinal County supervisor.

The council has to fill the vacancy by appointment for the remainder of Vitiello’s term. City officials said details for that process will soon be released.

Vitiello’s resignation becomes effective April 1, the day he plans to file his nomination signatures for county supervisor.

“As I look back on my time serving the wonderful community of Maricopa, I can’t help but feel mixed emotions,” Vitiello said. “It’s been six incredible years filled with joy, challenges and unforgettable moments. While saying goodbye is tough, I’m excited for what the future holds.”

Among those praising Vitiello’s past work as an elected city leader were Rep. Teresa Martinez, R-Casa Grande, and Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board members AnnaMarie Knorr and Torri Anderson. City Council members also recalled the fond experiences they shared with Vitiello.
