The football season came to an unfortunate end for Sequoia Pathway.

After all the excitement of reaching the 2A play-in bracket in their first season of competition in the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Sequoia Pathway football team watched COVID take it all away.

A dozen players had to quarantine after possible exposure to a student who tested positive as the 4-3 Pumas were set to play Morenci at Pacana Park tonight.

Coach Donnie Margerum tweeted out the news Thursday night after telling his players the “worst news ever. Even harder seeing my boys hurt like this.”

Pathway was seeded 12th to Morenci’s No. 5. The Pumas finished third in the Gila Region. Pathway players put up Top 10 statistics in the 2A conference.

Senior quarterback Alex Montano had 955 passing yards and scored 10 touchdowns during the season. He had 974 total yards. Senior Izaiah Stewart had 316 receiving yards. He was the conference’s top punt returner, averaging 37.8 yards and had 344 total return yards. He was 11th in rushing yards with 452 and scored eight touchdowns.

Senior kicker TJ Boyd had nine points-after-touchdown.
