Saturday spinout earns 347 maniac reckless driving charge

If you were driving on State Route 347 this weekend, you might have seen this unique sight.

In front of CEMEX’s Maricopa Ready-Mix Concrete Plant, a driver lost control and spun off the roadway, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. That car, which appears to be a dark gray Dodge Challenger, came to a rest an estimated 30 yards off the roadway.

The muscle car plowed through the metal fence along SR 347 and shed its rear bumper as it came to rest in the desert brush.

DPS said the call came in at 10:50 a.m. In trooper-speak, this was a reported single-vehicle collision with unknown injuries. There was an ambulance on site, but the extent and type of injuries wasn’t released.

That unnamed driver was cited for reckless driving and speeding, DPS confirmed.

Reckless driving, defined as operating a vehicle “in reckless disregard for the safety of persons or property,” is a criminal offense in Arizona. A first conviction carries fines and a 90-day license suspension; a second offense brings mandatory jail time, additional fines and possible license revocation.
