Desert Sunrise High School Principal Marlene Armstrong has resigned, Maricopa Unified School District officials confirm.

“Assistant Principal Phil Verdugo is the acting principal for the remainder of the school year,” MUSD spokesperson Mishell Terry said today.

School district officials declined to share details.

“All personnel matters are confidential,” Terry said. “Our primary focus remains on providing an uninterrupted, high-quality education to our students. We are confident in [Verdugo’s] ability to maintain the high standards of education and care that our community expects.”

A tip from a parent, who asked for anonymity, said parents were sent an email notifying them of the top administrative change.

“Recently, Superintendent Tracy Lopeman sent an email advising that the principal at the new Desert Sunrise High School was removed from her duties for the remainder of the school year,” the parent said.

“Many parents with kids at the school would like information as to why this is happening so late in the year and not even two years after the school was opened,” the parent said.

Desert Sunrise is MUSD’s newest school.
