Desert Sunrise High School students were evacuated this morning after some were exposed to acid fumes in a science classroom.

Maricopa police and fire crews responded to the “hazardous situation” at the school at 10:24 a.m., according to Phoenix Regional Dispatch.

Reporters saw students lined up in the DSHS parking lot at 11 a.m.

DSHS Principal Phil Verdugo addressed the incident in an email to parents shortly afterward.

“While the situation was addressed quickly and the classroom ventilated, students were not wearing masks at the time of the exposure,” the email said. “Salicylic acid fumes can cause mild respiratory irritation.”

Exposure symptoms can include mild coughing, throat irritation, watery eyes, nasal irritation and shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing in more sensitive individuals, according to the email. The principal encouraged parents to “monitor your child for any signs of breathing difficulty over the next 24 hours.”

For concerns about your child’s health, the school suggests parents contact their healthcare provider.

Maricopa Fire and Medical crews had left the high school by 11:36 a.m., according to city spokesperson Monica Williams, who said children were allowed to return to their classrooms due to “no lasting hazard.”

No children were transported to the hospital and all symptoms reported were minor, Williams said. Some students did opt to go home with their parents.
