Desert Sunrise High School’s swim team has made history. It’s the first time that all the team’s athletes qualified for state finals.
“It’s a huge accomplishment,” said swim team Head Coach Kate Dove.
The team is also the only one to receive all academic honors for the first quarter, Dove said.
Student-athletes Chloe and Ethan Armstrong, Isabella Owens and Adrian Williams all scored 4.0 grade point averages.
“This is a small but amazing team in every sense of the word,” Dove told InMaricopa. “This team just keeps making history.”
Junior Chloe Armstrong will be competing in the 100 back where she is ranked fifth and 100 fly where she is ranked seventh. She also qualified for the 200 IM.
She is the first Desert Sunrise High School athlete in history to qualify for states as a freshman and has qualified ever since.
Sophomore Ethan Armstrong qualified in the 200 IM, 100 fly, 500 free and 100 breaststroke. He also qualified in the boys 200 free and 400 free relays.
He will be competing in the 200 IM where he is ranked 13th, the 500 free where he is ranked 10th and both relays. He qualified for states as a freshman as well.
Sophomore Kristopher Stubbert qualified for the 500 free (ranked 32nd) and the 200 and 400 free relays. He will be swimming in all three. He also declared for the 200 free where he is ranked 52nd (they take top 40) and “we are waiting to see if he gets in that as well,” Dove said.
Sophomores Adrian Williams and Alejandro Porras-Graham qualified in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The 200 freestyle relay team is ranked 27th and the 400 freestyle relay team is ranked 22nd. They take the top 30 relays. It is Porras-Graham’s first year swimming.
Freshman Isabella Owens qualified for the 500 free, ranked 34th, and 100 back, ranked 25th.
