(First InMaricopa) Maricopa police are investigating a late-night shooting that left a man dead inside an apartment near Loma and Smith-Enke Roads after an ex-boyfriend was found hiding in a bathroom, according to a department statement to InMaricopa this morning.
Officers responded to the 45700 block of Village Parkway at about 11:34 p.m. yesterday after a woman reported she had entered her apartment with her boyfriend to grab personal items. Inside, they found her ex-boyfriend hiding in the bathroom. Police said the woman held an order of protection against him.
A confrontation followed. During the struggle, the current boyfriend fired a gun and struck the ex-boyfriend, who died from his injuries. Police have not released his name pending next of kin notification.
The couple called 911 immediately and stayed at the scene. Officers detained the shooter when they arrived, which police described as standard procedure. Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division are leading the case.
The investigation remains active.
