FACT CHECK: ‘Shots fired’ last night were fireworks

Maricopans stormed social media last night to share dozens of reports of shots fired in the residential core, even going so far as to tie what they heard to illegal immigration.

But it was just fireworks, according to Maricopa Police Department.

Homestead residents Brian Hussey and Cecily Parks said on Nextdoor they heard “shots” from their homes, while Glennwilde resident Shannon Trezos said she heard “gunshots” from Pacana Park.

“This is what happens when we have open boarders [sic.],” said Alterra resident Ann Marie Brown.

Glennwilde resident Emily Castle Wehrle said on Facebook with utmost certainty that “it was in Glennwilde, across from Sunrise Preschool. They took someone away in an ambulance.”

Not the case.

Police responded to a report of “possible shots fired” on the 19000 block of North Portarosa Drive in Glennwilde, west of Wehrle’s home. Sunrise Preschool is east.

No one was transported in an ambulance.

Officers “quickly determined that the noise was fireworks after speaking with several neighbors who reported seeing them,” MPD spokesperson Monica Williams told InMaricopa this morning.
