Filiberto’s still hinting at Maricopa location

A popular Mesa-based Mexican chain that announced its foray into Maricopa in 2020 hinted it hasn’t given up on expanding into the city.

Sonoran Creek Marketplace on North John Wayne Parkway has nearly filled since its completion in 2021, but one commercial space remains empty. It’s earmarked for Filiberto’s, the quintessentially Arizonan 24-hour Mexican spot.

Filiberto’s intends to take over Suite 130, according to developer Thompson Thrift. Last year, the developer sold the marketplace to an out-of-state “private buyer” for an undisclosed amount.

Although the company hasn’t submitted new documents to the city in nearly two years, an official with Filiberto’s hinted to InMaricopa that the Maricopa restaurant has not been declared dead in the water.

The official said there’s no projected opening date yet but promised to “keep us posted.”

Filiberto’s has not submitted any paperwork to the city that suggests the project is moving forward. A public records request found only a solitary document regarding the Mexican eatery — a site plan dated November 2021, which expired in July this year.
