It started when traditional high school proms in Maricopa were canceled en masse during the academic year coinciding with the pandemic shuttering schools, businesses and public places all over the country. While Maricopa Unified School District ended up throwing a socially distanced sort of pseudo-prom on the football field, Glennwilde resident Trevor Dayley, then the dad of a Maricopa High School junior, wanted the local upperclassmen to experience the crowning social event of high school — close dancing included. But, in an unconventional year, he made his prom a little unorthodox, too. Enter the bubbles. Millions of bubbles. Now in its fourth year, about 200 high schoolers showed out to the effervescent event the night of May 11, Dayley said. “The energy from the teens at the prom was amazing, and it was especially awesome to see how many stayed after to help clean up,” Dayley told InMaricopa. “Maricopa has the best youth, and it’s always a joy for our family to host such a fun, memorable event.” While the eldest daughter has aged out, Dayley this year has another daughter, Elin, who got to experience her senior prom in the bubbly backyard. Son Cash, 15, has the event to look forward to in a couple of years. Long story short — the Dayleys’ annual spumante ball is geared up to be a Maricopa tradition for years to come.
