A Waste Management garbage truck caught fire late this morning in The Lakes at Rancho El Dorado, prompting a swift response from Maricopa fire crews.
The incident was reported just before 11:30 a.m. on Powers Parkway. Fire officials say the blaze began in the truck’s load, forcing the driver to dump burning trash into the roadway to prevent further damage to the vehicle.
“Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported,” said Maricopa Fire and Medical Department spokesperson Elle Ortega.
Lakes resident Mark Budding, who lives on nearby Bedford Drive, said he was startled by “a sound like fireworks” before seeing a massive load of trash fall onto the street and ignite.
Cell phone video provided by Budding shows a plume of white smoke billowing from the truck’s cab, while black smoke rises from a glowing orange pile of burning debris.
It is not yet known if any homes or vehicles were damaged. The fire was under control within minutes of the department’s arrival.
