The massive Interstate 10 closure that snarled traffic in Maricopa this morning will impact Valley-bound drivers for a few more days as workers repair a sinkhole on the Gila River Bridge.
Eastbound I-10 will be closed between Riggs and Casa Blanca Roads from 9 p.m. tonight through 6 a.m. tomorrow due to damage to the bridge’s concrete deck, which had worn through to the underlying rebar, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The interstate will be narrowed down to one lane near the bridge, from 6 a.m. Wednesday through 5 a.m. Thursday, according to ADOT. The speed limit in the work zone is reduced to 35 miles per hour.
ADOT first said around 9 a.m. a brief overnight closure would end early tomorrow morning. At 4 p.m., the timeline was extended 24 hours, including during morning and afternoon rush hour tomorrow.
Traffic from I-10 will be detoured onto Riggs Road to southbound State Routes 87 and 587, according to ADOT. However, this morning, ADOT cameras showed queues of standstill traffic on westbound Riggs Road turning onto SR 347 and turning from southbound SR 347 onto Casa Blanca Road.
