To the editor,
We understand the concerns raised following the E. coli detection on Aug. 26, 2025, in the Global Water – Santa Cruz Water Company, Inc. service area in Maricopa. Your health and safety are our highest priority, and we want to share the facts about what happened and how we’re ensuring your water remains safe.
What happened
On Aug. 26, one routine water sample tested positive for E. coli. This was the first such result in the history of our Maricopa system. All subsequent tests have been negative, confirming that the water meets Safe Drinking Water standards.
Our testing and compliance
Global Water follows strict federal and state regulations under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), administered in Arizona by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ).
- We collect more than 1,000 bacteriological samples annually across Maricopa.
- Every sample is analyzed by a certified third-party laboratory.
- Results are generally available within 18-24 hours of testing.
- We also disinfect the water supply in accordance with regulations.
These procedures are designed to ensure disinfection, continuous monitoring and rapid response to any potential bacteriological issues.
Why this matters
Bacteria such as E. coli occur naturally in the environment and can enter water systems through events like line breaks or surface runoff. It is possible that a positive test can also result from sampling or laboratory error, that’s why the testing process is highly regulated and carefully managed.
