A family was being transported to the hospital this afternoon after a white or grey pickup truck ran a red light and smashed the front end of their vehicle.

The car had two adults and four kids inside. The kids’ ages are 1, 6, 10 and 13. The youngest was in a car seat.

The accident happened at the intersection of John Wayne Parkway and Bowlin Road, in front of the Circle K gas station. Witnesses told InMaricopa that a pickup truck was traveling north on John Wayne Parkway and ran the red light. It smashed into the front of the family vehicle as it crossed the intersection.

The driver stopped but kept going after a few seconds, heading north on John Wayne Parkway, the witnesses said. Theys aid the truck was severely damaged in the wreck.

The driver of that family vehicle was injured but remained on scene. He didn’t have visible injuries. His family insisted on taking him to the hospital for observation.

“I’m just happy they’re alive,” said a family member, as the family piled into another vehicle, to go to the hospital.

Maricopa police officers referred a reporter on the scene to a Maricopa press liaison. At the time of this publication, the city hadn’t offered details on that truck that caused the accident and was speeding through town. Ak-Chin Police were assisting in the accident investigation but referred reporters to their Community Events team.

The accident was witnessed by several other drivers who waited to give statements to police officers.

Two young kids on bikes waited with witnesses. They were waiting to cross the street and helped call 911.

“People are just driving way too fast out here,” said one witness.

The intersection does have cameras.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
