Harbor Freight starts $325K reno at ex-dollar store

Construction to convert the former 99 Cents Only on Edison Road at John Wayne Parkway into a Harbor Freight Tools store is underway.

The 99 Cents Only signage was removed from the façade and posters indicating the incoming Harbor Freight is hiring are now hanging outside.

The store has been gutted and crews are working inside to get the space ready to carry the power tools, generators, jacks and other items that the Calabasas, Calif.-based hardware retailer sells.

According to new documents obtained Wednesday from the city’s planning department, the construction being done on the outside of the store will mostly be patches and repairs as well as repainting the exterior.

Harbor Freight signs will be added to the front and north side of the building in white block lettering and where the signs are located will be painted in the iconic red the hardware store is known for.

Harbor Freight received a permit for the commercial tenant improvements Sept. 11, the same day it was confirmed the retailer would expand into Maricopa. The improvements are valued at $325,000.

The store will hire 25 to 30 people — those interested in applying can do so on Harbor Freight’s website — and is expected to start business in December.
