The long-awaited bridge over the Santa Rosa Wash on Porter Road has reached a significant milestone.

Crews used two cranes to install 20 large girders last week in preparation for laying the bridge deck.

Girders, each weighing 90,000 pounds, according to CIP Project Manager Kerry Osborn, were transported to the site on oversize-load trucks.

The bridge is part of the Sonoran Desert Parkway project, which is slated to open late summer or early fall, according to Quinn Konold, communications director for the city.

The west side of the project has been sitting with no visible construction moving forward in recent weeks. Curbs outline the roadway, where paving is scheduled to begin on May 8.
