“How doers get more done.”

Home Depot is staying true to its motto here in Maricopa.

The retailer confirmed plans to begin construction at its future store on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway and Stonegate Road this month, according to company spokesperson Evelyn Fornes.

“We are currently planning to start construction in December,” she wrote in an email to InMaricopa.

This schedule follows City Manager Rick Horst’s statement during a Nov. 24 city council meeting. At the time, Horst said the store was finishing its “third and, hopefully, final round of comments” on its plan review.

Things are a little ahead of schedule, based on Horst’s comments last month.

Home Depot “should start going up we think maybe December, first of the year more likely,” he said.

Fornes did not provide a specific date for a groundbreaking but did say the current construction timeline calls for a fall opening next year.

After withdrawing interest from coming to Maricopa in 2008, the Atlanta-based home improvement company reinvigorated those plans in April. At the time, Horst said it was a big step.

“Home Depot is a significant retailer for us and, of course, they will attract others,” he said. “If you look around the greater Phoenix area and you see one of these big boxes pop up, a lot of other businesses like to sit next to them.”
