K-9 nabs cop fighter who gave fake name

A Maricopa man had a lesson in “Karma” early Sunday morning, cops said. 

After a warrant check escalated into a tussle with police and their K-9, it seems the suspect was barking up the wrong tree. He drew first blood, but the doggy detective aptly named “Karma” had the last laugh.

Maricopa Police Department arrested Stanley J. Ulate, 20, on a trifecta of charges, according to a probable cause statement obtained by InMaricopa detailing the incident. 

Just before 1:30 a.m., police stopped a vehicle for a registration violation near North John Wayne Parkway and Cobblestone Farms Drive. 

A passenger in the vehicle gave cops a bogus name. But officers soon figured out his real identity and that he may have had multiple warrants. 

Officers tried to detain Ulate while they awaited warrant confirmation, but he began resisting, according to the probable cause statement. 

Ulate allegedly struck one officer in the face with a closed fist. Police tried to tase him but failed.  

Officers said they struck Ulate in the face repeatedly. The K-9 Karma eventually bit Ulate, subduing him as he was handcuffed. 

While in custody, Ulate allegedly spit in the K-9 handler’s face. 

Ulate was booked into the Pinal County jail two violent felony charges, one for aggravated assault on a peace officer and another for resisting arrest by fighting. He was also slapped with one misdemeanor charge for false reporting.
