Burrito Express, a fast-casual Mexican chain known for its handmade burritos, proposes opening a new location at the Circle K near Honeycutt and Porter Roads. The gas station ranks among the busiest in Arizona.

A site plan, project narrative and building permits were filed with the City of Maricopa last week. The plans call for the restaurant to share space with the existing Circle K at 41433 W. Honeycutt Road.

Jeremy McMurtry, a facilities coordinator for Circle K’s corporate offices in Tempe, confirmed to InMaricopa that the project is progressing quickly.

“We are going to set up a bid walk and then schedule construction once we award a general contractor the bid,” McMurtry said yesterday.

The building permit was issued June 2. Circle K awaits Southwest Gas to furnish it with plans for adding natural gas.

“I believe this site will be starting construction mid-July or early August,” McMurtry said. “We are really at the mercy of the gas company.”

McMurtry also signed off on the new signage earlier this month, approving fabrication and installation by Graham’s Neon, according to a June 10 letter.

This will mark Burrito Express’s first location in Maricopa. The family-owned chain, which began in Tempe in 1995, has since expanded to several locations across the East Valley. Burrito Express has built a loyal following with its generous breakfast burritos, classic green chile and machaca offerings, and community-driven service ethos.

With its bold red signage soon to join the Circle K facade, the restaurant will bring its quick-service model to a fuel stop that already sees heavy daily traffic.
