Maricopa Police Department this morning confirmed the male who was killed in a train crash in the Heritage District on Friday was a 16-year-old boy from Maricopa.

“Initially, the individual was identified as an adult male,” said the department spokesperson, Monica Williams. “However, following further investigation, the individual was a 16-year-old from Maricopa.”

The investigation remains in the jurisdiction of the Union Pacific police.

“Our hearts go out to the family, friends and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss,” Williams said this morning.

InMaricopa on Friday was first to report the fatality in the area of Plainview Street and Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway, near the train station.

The teen pedestrian who died “was struck while walking on the tracks, not in a crossing,” said Union Pacific spokesperson Kristen South. She said the train crew was uninjured.

The Pinal County Medical Examiner’s Office this morning had not filed death records for the 16-year-old. InMaricopa has requested them.
