Sedan crashes into MUSD school bus

A Mazda sedan crashed into Maricopa Unified School District Bus 98 near Honeycutt Road and Plainview Street at about 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 27.

MUSD Director of Transportation Sergio Pulido said there were no students onboard.

“Thank God it was empty,” he said.

One of the district’s newest buses was on its way to Maricopa High School when the sedan collided with the side of the school bus, according to Maricopa Police and MUSD staff.

Rosemary Lane, a witness to the incident, said she observed the bus driver look both ways before the car came “flying down the street.”

The car’s air bags did not deploy.

Maricopa Fire and Medical examined the sedan driver and checked for signs of impairment. He was assisted out of the vehicle and transported to Chandler Regional Medical Center with reported neck and back pain.

The bus driver did not suffer any injuries, police said.

Cause of the crash remains under investigation.
