City Manager Brenda Fischer said she can hear who’s coming to her office on the thin floor of the manufactured building that is City Hall on West Madison Avenue.

“I can tell who’s coming by their footsteps,” Fischer told a crowd of about 200 who gathered Saturday morning for the groundbreaking of the new Maricopa City Complex.

That will change when the new complex opens in the fall of 2013.

Construction on the complex at Bowlin and White and Parker roads, which includes a city hall and police station, is scheduled to begin late June, said Bill Oakland, whose company, Oakland Construction, is the primary contractor.

Principal architect Jay Silverberg said his firm, Gensler, struggled a bit to describe in architectural nomenclature the style used for the new city hall, so they invented a term of their own.
