Leo Madrigal, an award-winning Phoenix chef who is bringing his Cocina Madrigal restaurant concept to Maricopa, will appear on The Kelly Clarkson Show Wednesday. The show airs at 2 p.m. on Channel 3, Arizona’s Family.

Madrigal said he could not discuss the nature of his appearance, but that there would be “something big” announced on the show.

“We are coming to Maricopa, so people should tune in and learn a little bit about what we’re about,” Madrigal said. “Something big is going to happen, although I’d get in big trouble if I say what.”

Madrigal currently is in the process of closing on a land purchase near city hall, where he plans to build his restaurant. Cocina Madrigal is an upscale, sit-down Mexican restaurant and Madrigal has chosen Maricopa as the location for its second location.

The restaurant is planned for the northeast corner of Bowlin and White and Parker roads, where Maricopa’s Chief Economic Development Officer Nathan Steele said he expects the development of several mixed-use projects over the next few years as the City Center concept begins to take shape. Steele said he has spoken with Madrigal, who is anxious to get started.

“He’s not the kind of guy who wants to waste time,” Steele said. “I would expect some kind of activity to be going on there within the next 12-18 months, if not sooner,” Steele said. “People in Maricopa want dining options here in town for a date night – the kind of place you can go and have a great restaurant experience without having to drive 45 minutes.”

The original Cocina Madrigal location at 16th St. and University in Phoenix is recognized as one of the best Mexican restaurants in the country. It is ranked as fifth on Yelp’s list of the Top 100 Places to Eat in the United States and number two in Trip Advisor’s Best Restaurants in Phoenix.
