New police report says what led to, who was injured in Copper Sky pool brawl

Police documents released this morning tell more about what caused the melee at Maricopa’s public pool that landed 19-year-old Iyanna Shaw in jail over Memorial Day weekend.

The fight was ongoing when Maricopa Police Department officers arrived at the Copper Sky Aquatic Center just after 4 p.m. Sunday and found “a large congregation of people leaving the pool area, all of which were yelling loudly at one another,” according to the probable cause statement obtained by InMaricopa.

The officers learned that the fight started with a verbal argument between relatives of Shaw and unrelated children at the pool. The mother of those children reportedly tried to separate the parties immediately.

But police said Shaw became upset and “inserted herself” into the altercation, prompting lifeguards to immediately evacuate the area.

Amateur video footage of the unrest sent to InMaricopa showed the mother, her husband and two kids trying to escape into the aquatic center building as Shaw tried to force her way through the lifeguards in pursuit.

Once everyone moved inside, police reported seeing Shaw “raising her right fist above her head and bringing it down” and “striking” the mother and her husband five to ten times.

The mother, who had visible injuries on her neck, was carrying her child during the assault, said police officers. Her husband’s lips and nose were bloodied. Multiple pool-goers told the officers that Shaw was the primary aggressor who threw the first punch, according to the report.

Shaw was booked into the Pinal County jail on misdemeanor charges of assault, endangerment and disorderly conduct. She faces a year and a half behind bars.
