Authorities work the scene of the officer-involved shooting in Homestead North.

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man killed Sunday morning in a confrontation with Maricopa police.

Lawrence Knudsen, 56, of Maricopa was shot and killed by police on a Homestead street after he allegedly threatened officers with a gun.

PCSO has been charged with investigating the shooting as it involved members of the Maricopa Police Department.

Officers were summoned about 7:50 a.m. to a home near West Robbins Drive and North Mac Neil Street for a report of a “suicidal subject” armed with a handgun in the front yard of the residence, according to Lauren Reimer, public information officer for PCSO.

“Once on scene, the suspect began making threats toward officers in an attempt to engage them,” Reimer said in a statement to InMaricopa. “As the suspect advanced toward officers into the street, an MPD officer fired her duty weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

PCSO detectives continue to actively investigate the incident, which includes reviewing audio and video of the incident, Reimer said. Until that process is complete, she added, no further details regarding the suspect’s behavior or the moments leading up to the shooting will be made available.

Maricopa officers have worn body cameras since 2015, the year of the department’s last officer-involved shooting, in Cobblestone Farms.

According to Maricopa police Sgt. Hal Koozer, who spoke Sunday to InMaricopa at the Homestead scene, it is unknown if the man discharged his weapon. Investigators will try to determine if the man fired on officers.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay for a minimum of three days – standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, Koozer said.

It was initially believed that the Arizona Department of Public Safety would investigate, but PCSO has taken on that role.
