One of Maricopa’s busiest roads just got a little slower

A major change has come to one of the city’s busiest roads

The speed limit on a portion of Porter Road between Honeycutt Road and Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway is being reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph this month to make the entire stretch 35 mph, according to the City of Maricopa

A news release published Tuesday said with Porter Road being home to multiple schools, Pacana Park and one of Maricopa’s busiest gas stations, the goal is to “create a safer and more predictable driving environment.”

Mayor Nancy Smith applauded the effort.

“This change on Porter Road is a great example of how we are responding to real conditions on the ground while keeping the long-term safety of our residents at the forefront,” she said.

This comes at a time of increased roadwork around the city to address safety issues. Recent projects include a new turn lane and signals at Cobblestone Farms Drive and John Wayne Parkway, as well as traffic signals on Desert Greens Drive and Smith-Enke Road.

    1. It’s cute how the only people who give a crap about Kamala Harris these days are Republicans.

  1. Interesting. None of those schools, parks or gas stations are new. Been there for years. Why now?

  2. Completely pointless.

The absent minded city planners let the developers fund and build roads far larger than will ever be necessary, outstripping the necessary useable capacity, with no plan for long-term maintenance while doggedly refusing to look at any other or cheaper alternative traffic management solutions that are not traffic lights. (Such as roundabouts, this is where the smart money is going) All the while these same planners bitch at us like we are stupid children that we are “killing the planet” and “it’s global warming man” while insisting we all drive electric cars because they can not install signals that don’t run off a static timer – regardless of what traffic is actually doing.

Then surprise surprise people drive like it’s a dragstrip. Because it is. A government approved 1/2mile strip, light to light.

  3. This makes no sense. We need to be increasing the speed limit, not decreasing them. Cars are so much more safer today than they were in the past. slow drivers cause more accidents than fast drivers.

  4. Another slow road? Heck yeah. This is why I moved here. All roads should be 35 and under… including the 347 and mcg hwy. All the way to cg and phoenix.

  5. Can we make the whole city 45 mph? If its one of the busiest streets why slow it down? City officials need to listen to the regular citizens not just those who have nothing to do but show up to meetings.
Also, why do it in the middle of summer and not when schools are starting?

Vehicle AC systems and enhine cooling systems dont opperate as efficiently at 35mph as they do at 45 and 50mph due to lack of airflow… so expect additional delays for overheat cars 👌

    1. The answer to literally all of your questions is “because there’s schools there”. Little kids don’t need to be in danger of being run down by some chode who “likes to go fast”.

Your vehicle AC argument can be solved by having a better compressor/more efficient fan.

  6. Thats goid, but what are you doing about car & motorcycle drag racine on Porter in the evening & early morning hours?
