Outstanding in their field: Maricopa High lays new gridiron

It is eerily quiet at Maricopa High School this week. Usually, at 10 a.m., the school would be overrun by any of the 2,188 students and staff.

This week, as kids enjoy their spring break, it’s the perfect time for some sod-laying.

Mammoth Sports Construction, the Meridian, Kan.-based company that lays football fields for the NCAA’s Big 12 Conference (think Arizona State and UofA) was out on the Rams football field Tuesday morning, ripping up the existing sod.

It was a plan approved in January when the school board greenlit the new weather-resistant sod. The job cost $655,000, spending a bit extra to keep the turf cooler.

Ripping up the old stuff, laying the new turf and painting the new field design should take the better part of two weeks, according to school officials. The goal is to get it done before students return and have it ready for May’s high school graduation.

While we’re waiting for the final design to be unveiled, it will look similar to this version shown to the school board in January, with color taken out of the Ram mascot’s eye and changes to the endzone.
