(First InMaricopa) Three members of one family were killed in a State Route 238 crash last week, relatives said, as loved ones now launch a fundraiser to cover burial and recovery costs.
Maricopa County Medical Examiner records identify two of the victims as Cassy Ann Cheno, 50, and Rigoberto Cheno, 39, both of whom died March 16. Relatives say a third victim, the couple’s youngest daughter, aged 11, died later from her injuries.
In an email this morning, Marlaya Mesquita, one of the couple’s surviving daughters, asked InMaricopa to share the family’s fundraiser. She said they need help paying for the burials.
In a GoFundMe, the mother’s aunt Judy Dacumos wrote the loss is “an unimaginable tragedy” and said the family is facing funeral costs, medical bills and ongoing care for the two surviving girls.
Dacumos said the family is now dealing with $16,000 in funeral expenses, medical bills and the ongoing cost of caring for the girls as they recover.
Relatives echoed those details in Facebook comments under a March 16 post from The Why Not Travel Store, which reported that three people had died at noon that day and that travelers could face a closure lasting at least five hours.
Christina Miller of El Mirage on Thursday said that one surviving sister, 13, was released from the hospital that day while the other, 14, remained in intensive care.
“Their two surviving daughters are injured and now face a long and difficult recovery — physically, emotionally and spiritually,” said Dacumos of Chico, Calif.
Authorities have not publicly released a full account of how last week’s crash happened.
Dora Gibson, the father’s aunt, wrote: “My nephew died … The men said my nephew tried to U-turn.”
Commenters described the stretch of highway — called “Dead Cow Road” by locals — as dangerous and said they had seen risky passing in the curving section of SR 238 that morning, including one woman who said a white truck had nearly hit her head-on while passing multiple vehicles. Another motorist wrote that he arrived shortly after the crash, saw a dog running loose from the scene and believed only two people of the car’s four occupants were still conscious.
The crash occurred on the same stretch where, in October, a westbound SUV crossed into oncoming traffic and killed 29-year-old Robert Jeffrey Pifer. Earlier last year, an 18-year-old driver attempting to pass crossed into oncoming traffic in a separate crash, causing a four-vehicle collision that injured six people and crippled a 17-year-old.

I think 238 should be officially called: DEATH ALLEY!
We have far too many close encounters on that highway to ever be comfortable driving through it. People are completely insane, and drive way past the speed limits all the time, while trying to pass everyone in front of them. There is absolutely no speeding or other traffic laws being enforced on a regular basis on that road, making it extremely dangerous. Be safe and avoid 238.
