Thermometer Heat

The Phoenix region set another record Monday with the latest 90-degree temperature in a calendar year.

The temperature reached a high of 92 degrees at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, according to the National Weather Service. The record temperature for the date was 89 degrees (1999) and the average high is 75 degrees for the date. On average (from 1981 to 2010), the last 90-degree high is recorded on Oct. 28.

High temperatures in the upper 80s are expected through the week, and forecasters say records for Nov. 17 are in jeopardy as temperatures are expected to rise near 90 degrees again Tuesday.

The trend of a warmer fall follows a brutally hot summer that helped set a record for the most 115-degree days in a calendar year.

Sunday marked the 87th consecutive day without measurable precipitation at the weather service’s official station in Phoenix. There is no rain in the forecast for the next week, forecasters said.

In a Facebook post, the weather service said the state “can go long stretches without rain at pretty much any time. The record in Phoenix is 160 days. One thing we may see is greater variability in seasonal rainfall from year-to-year.”
