Maricopa police lodged five charges against a 34-year-old man in Tortosa who they say got drunk and attacked an officer.

A homeowner near Honeycutt Road and Terragona Boulevard requested a welfare check on a strange man who wandered up to his home after 11 p.m. Monday, according to a probable cause statement. The caller said he let the man sit in his garage after complaints of a foot injury.

Police say they found the man, Matthew Pintado, passed out on a chair and arrested him for causing a disturbance. Pintado resisted arrest and tried to avoid getting into the cop car that would have taken him home, according to the statement.

Once home, Pintado allegedly refused to sign a ticket and tried to spit on an officer. He then refused to be driven to Pinal County Jail, verbally threatening officers and trying to “headbutt or bite” them, according to police documents.

One officer punched Pintado in the face and leg, according to those documents.

Pintado was booked into the county jail on two felony counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer and one felony count of resisting arrest with threats or force. He also faces a pair of misdemeanor charges stemming from the late-night tussle.
