Proposed public sports fieldhouse goes before residents

The City of Maricopa intends to build a $16.2 million, 42,000-square-foot recreational fieldhouse that could one day draw local tournaments and sports tourism.

“We are hopeful construction will begin this winter and take approximately 12 to 16 months,” city spokesperson Monica Williams said today.

The project is planned on city-owned property on the southeast corner of West Bowlin Road and North Greythorn Drive. It is adjacent to Copper Sky Multigenerational Center.

City officials said the project would involve renovating the existing police substation. The new stadium would support a gymnasium and fieldhouse facility for basketball, volleyball and pickleball courts and batting cages.

“We are in the design phase of this project,” Williams said.

City officials are still reviewing cost estimates and finalizing the design “to see where exactly we will land,” she said, adding city’s development services staff would share more details later.

“This project is designed to bring more court spaces to Maricopa, and it creates more opportunity for more sports leagues,” Assistant City Manager Matt Kozlowski recently told the city council, addressing the city’s capital budget.

Kozlowski said the fieldhouse is proposed for indoor events and could be a draw for sports tourism, further making the city a destination.

The gym and fieldhouse would be a pre-engineered metal building with panels in attractive desert color tones and patterns, city officials said. The building’s proposed maximum height is 42 feet.

The city must first go through a zoning amendment to clear the proposed structure near single-family homes. The rezoning and amendment proposes changing the designation from mixed-use and employment to public-institutional.

Three neighborhood meetings are planned to cover the project’s zoning:

  • 6 p.m. Sept. 12 at Maricopa Library & Cultural Center, 18160 N. Maya Angelou Drive.
  • 6 p.m. Oct. 14 before the city Planning and Zoning Commission at City Hall, 39700 W. Civic Center Plaza.
  • 6 p.m. Nov. 19 before the Maricopa City Council, 39700 W. Civic Center Plaza.

Residents can send comments to the city and contact case planner Alexander Bosworth at 520-316-6948 or email him at [email protected], with New City Gym & Field House in the subject bar.
