(First InMaricopa) Casa Grande Police Department released new details to InMaricopa today regarding a drive-by shooting in that city Saturday.
The shooting stemmed from a suspected road rage incident and led to a dramatic SWAT team arrest Tuesday in Maricopa, according to the 46 pages of police documents the department released first to InMaricopa.
Former Maricopa High School quarterback Damian Logan was arrested and charged with a drive-by shooting. He is accused of firing at least five shots, but the two occupants of the vehicle upon which he opened fire were not harmed.
According to the records released today by Casa Grande police, the victim, who was driving a Chrysler 300, told officers he brake-checked a dark sedan that had been following him from a McDonald’s. The driver of the sedan then pulled up next to him “and started to shoot,” the victim told police.
Witnesses reported seeing the shooter wearing a black mask at the time. The authorities estimated as many as 10 shots were fired, based on the damage to the minivan, audio of the shooting picked up on doorbell cameras and shell casings recovered from the scene.
The victim initially believed he had been shot but only had a bruised ankle, possibly from a ricocheted bullet, the officers theorized.
Casa Grande Police Officer Richard Vassell investigated the shooting, reviewing surveillance footage from McDonald’s. He said he recognized the suspect but did not remember his name. Logan was also the quarterback for the Casa Grande Union High School football team in 2024, according to the police and archived sports rosters.
In an unusual turn of events, Casa Grande officers assisted Logan with changing a tire just hours after the shooting. The interaction was recorded on an officer’s body camera. Police noted that the footage shows a bullet hole in Logan’s Kia Optima. It was not immediately clear why Logan’s vehicle had a gunshot hole if he was the one firing. InMaricopa has contacted Casa Grande police for clarification.
On Tuesday, Casa Grande police tracked Logan to a Maricopa address in the Desert Cedars neighborhood of the city, where he was arrested. Officers executed a search warrant at the home and collected 11 items, including firearms, ammunition and clothing, according to the new records.
When Logan was taken into custody, officers said his shoes resembled those worn by the suspect in McDonald’s security footage.
Logan faces multiple charges, including two counts each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm at a nonresidential structure, unlawful discharge of a firearm, discharge of a firearm at an occupied structure, disorderly conduct with a weapon and drive-by shooting.
