We have new information on the pockmarked sedan being investigated on Bowlin Road.

Troopers are telling InMaricopa it was a “road rage situation” that resulted in shots being fired shortly before 1 p.m. today.

One person was sent to the hospital with unknown injuries, said Bart Graves, the Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesperson.

Although the bullet-riddled Lexus ES was stopped on the streets of Maricopa, DPS is handling this investigation because of where the incident started, said Maricopa police spokesperson Monica Williams. That means the events that led to the shooting, and perhaps the shooting itself happened outside Maricopa city limits.

The black sedan in question was pulled over on westbound Bowlin Road between Alterra Parkway and John Wayne Parkway.

The crime scene is about 150 yards east of Maricopa Elementary School and 150 yards west of the Bungalows on Bowlin. Police activity there has been heavy since 12:45 p.m.

The elementary school was unaffected by the investigation, said Maricopa Unified School District spokesperson Mishell Terry.

Two Maricopa police units, three Department of Public Safety units, Maricopa Fire Ladder Tender 571 and an ambulance were on the scene at 2 p.m. A gurney was unloaded from the ambulance.

A witness told InMaricopa at 2:30 p.m. she saw a male in a black shirt being handcuffed.
