Sequoia Pathway Academy is narrowing its focus on seventh and eighth grade students by creating a dedicated space and tailoring programs to their academic and developmental needs, announced school officials last week.
While the school has always served junior high students, it is now enhancing its approach to provide a more positive experience for them and their families.
“Many local junior high schools in Maricopa serve large student populations,” said Campus Director Julianne Toepfer. “At Sequoia Pathway, we offer an alternative to the big-school experience. Our junior high provides smaller class sizes, teachers who understand and appreciate the uniqueness of the middle school years, and a system of positive reinforcement that celebrates students for doing the right thing every day.”
The junior high program has moved to a separate space on the Sequoia Pathway campus, giving students access to facilities including a dedicated science lab and an Interactive Media class.
The junior high area occupies a section of the elementary building, creating an “age-appropriate culture and environment” for middle school students, said Toepfer. Students are placed in small teaching teams to help teachers build stronger relationships and support individual growth.
The new junior high includes athletics and after-school clubs such as culinary arts, visual arts and co-ed soccer. Administrators said they continue to add offerings based on student interest.
Enrollment is open mid-year, and families can apply online at SequoiaPathway.org.
