Smith-Enke roadwork reaches halfway point

The improvements at the intersection of Smith-Enke Road and John Wayne Parkway are about halfway done.

The project increases the capacity of the intersection to accommodate more cars and improve safety. The project is currently scheduled to be complete in the spring.

What improvements are being made?

East of John Wayne Parkway on Smith-Enke Road:

  1. Dedicated right turn lane. A new, free-flowing right-turn lane will be added, allowing westbound traffic on Smith-Enke Road to turn onto northbound John Wayne Parkway without stopping.
  2. Additional left turn lane. A second left-turn lane will be added for traffic turning southbound onto John Wayne Parkway, increasing capacity for vehicles at peak times and reducing delays.
  3. Raised median and access road. A new raised median along Smith-Enke Road will redirect traffic to a newly constructed entrance to the CVS and the Maricopa Station shopping center. This change enhances visibility for other vehicles and limits potential collisions.

West of John Wayne Parkway on State Route 238:

  1. Extended median. The existing raised median on SR 238 will be lengthened, creating additional queuing space for vehicles to turn left onto northbound John Wayne Parkway.
  2. Redirection of shopping center traffic. The extended median will also redirect westbound traffic accessing the Bashas’ shopping center to a safer, secondary entrance further west.
