“The truck attempted to turn left in front of the semi and collided with the semi,” the spokesperson said.

The roadway has been reopened since about noon.

UPDATE 12:02 p.m. July 25, 2025 Two people from the pickup truck were transported to a hospital with “serious injuries,” according to a spokesperson for Maricopa’s public safety departments. They had to be extricated from the vehicle.

The semi-truck driver was evaluated on scene and declined transport to the hospital for further examination.

ORIGINAL STORY 11:24 a.m. July 25, 2025 A head-on collision between a trash-hauling semi and a silver pickup truck closed State Route 238 in both directions late this morning just east of Ralston Road, triggering a large-scale emergency response and causing major traffic delays.

The crash was first reported at 10:54 a.m. inside Maricopa city limits. Initially dispatched as a vehicle collision, the call was reclassified as a medical emergency 10 minutes later on the Phoenix Regional Dispatch channel.

At least three ambulances, four Maricopa Fire & Medical Department units from multiple stations and a Maricopa police officer responded to the scene by 11 a.m. Goodyear Fire Department also responded as part of the Phoenix-area mutual aid system.

The crash occurred near the intersection of SR 238 and Ralston Road, where a yearlong culvert replacement project has forced heavy truck traffic onto tight neighborhood detours. Authorities rerouted semi-trucks bound for Gila Bend onto Mockingbird Lane, where multiple drivers were seen making U-turns amid the confusion. Traffic was significantly backed up by 11:10 a.m., and ambulances were seen kicking up dust along the dirt shoulders of the highway.

Dispatchers initially described the crash as involving extrication and injuries. At 11:15 a.m., InMaricopa reporters at the scene observed a large red tarp and a silver pickup truck with a camper shell that had sustained extreme front-end damage. Its windshield was shattered, airbags deployed, and the hood and cab were crumpled.

Nearby, a semi-truck with Mr. Bulit’s, Inc. insignia — part of a waste-hauling fleet — was jackknifed near the train tracks. The trailer was facing southeast while the cab was twisted southwest. The pickup truck had come to rest on the north side of the highway, facing north.

A spokesperson for Maricopa’s public safety departments described the crash as a “head-on collision between a semi and a pickup” at 11:19 a.m. “SR 238 is currently blocked both directions.”

By 11:30 a.m., SR 238 was closed farther east at Loma Road and ambulances were hospital bound.
