Nine student-athletes and two employees at Leading Edge Academy in Maricopa are expected to recover from injuries sustained in a fatal car crash yesterday afternoon just north of city limits.

The van was en route to a flag football game in Avondale when the crash on Riggs Road occurred around 3 p.m., said Lori Anderson, executive director of Lead Charter Schools, the parent company of Leading Edge Academy.

The driver of the vehicle that collided with the Leading Edge van was pronounced dead at the scene.

“While there are some moderate injuries, all 11 are expected to recover,” Anderson said. “We are asking for continued thoughts and prayers for all involved and their families.”

Riggs Road was shut down for westbound traffic from State Route 347 to 16th Street after the crash and reopened shortly after 10 p.m., Gila River Police Department said.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing and further details have yet to be released.
