This crime story is one rock-filled cage short of a whole Maricopa buzzword enchilada.
Maricopa police used license plate-reading cameras to track a red Tesla to a man accused of shoplifting liquor from Maricopa’s most infamous Circle K. The police located the suspect sedan at a Maricopa casino and arrested the driver, who is from California, days later at Walmart.
Officers responded April 18 to the Circle K at John Wayne Parkway and Bowlin Road, where 40-year-old Metrovae Berry Simes allegedly stole three bottles of alcohol and fled in his Tesla Model 3, according to a probable cause statement.
The authorities noted that the theft was caught plainly on surveillance camera.
While police quickly traced his car to the casino, Simes was not immediately located. In large public records databases, his most recent address is in Los Angeles County, Calif.
On Wednesday, Flock license plate cameras flagged the Tesla again at Walmart after police officers had watched Simes “on local traffic cameras driving throughout the city of Maricopa,” they said.
When Simes exited the store, officers detained him. He reportedly admitted to the theft, telling the officers that “he was going through a rough patch” with his children and girlfriend.
Simes was booked into the Pinal County jail on a shoplifting charge and faces up to six months behind bars.
