Updated 11:11 a.m.: The roadway has been reopened. Fire crews are still on the scene dousing a smoldering container.

A train fire Friday night closed a section of Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway, according to Maricopa police.

At about 8 p.m., Maricopa police and Maricopa Fire and Medical responded to a report of a fire on a train heading toward Casa Grande, according to city spokesperson Monica Williams.

“The fire was contained to one car with two containers on it,” Williams said. “No injuries and the cause remains under investigation.”

Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway, between White and Parker and Murphy roads, has been closed as crews clear debris from the Pacific Union Railroad Tracks.

Maricopa police said the closure is expected to last for several hours.

Coming from the East or headed East, drivers should take Farrell Road to White and Parker, then use Honeycutt Road to Murphy Road to reconnect with Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. Drivers on White and Parker Road looking to go west will be redirected onto Farrell Road.
