Wanted man caught, released in Maricopa after wife thrown from moving car

Heavy police, fire and medical presence at a U-Haul lot near Mercado Street the afternoon of Jan. 26 led witnesses to theorize that the trucks could have been suspected of trafficking drugs or humans. It was later revealed that police were investigating an odd domestic violence incident there. [Elias Weiss]

It was a scene that shocked passersby in Maricopa on Sunday afternoon and got a lot of attention on social media. A woman flung from a moving car on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway and a major investigation into what happened.

There was a flurry of questions about the scene on social media, too. People theorized a major drug bust, or maybe a murder, based on the number of police, fire and ambulance on the scene.

InMaricopa was curious too, so we asked Maricopa PD for the report. Here’s what we learned:

After a flurry of 911 calls from concerned witnesses about a woman being thrown from a moving car, Maricopa cops pulled them over in the U-Haul lot at the Stagestop Marketplace on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway near Plainview Street at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The driver, Timothy Bridges, wouldn’t explain how his wife fell out of his car, only that he was trying to get her to a nearby urgent care. When police ran Bridges through their system, they found that he was wanted in Mesa on a $500 bond warrant. Bridges was held in a squad car while they continued their investigation.

The wife initially told officers that she jumped from the car because of “the stress in her life.” She later told officers that she was pushed out of the vehicle but then changed her story back to jumping from the vehicle of her own volition. According to a police report, she had road rashes on her right arm and right leg. InMaricopa is withholding the woman’s name because she wasn’t charged with a crime and may be a domestic violence victim.

What exactly happened, the police still don’t know. Neither the wanted Bridges nor his wife would help in the investigation.

Maricopa PD called Mesa and asked if they wanted to come down and pick Bridges up on that outstanding warrant. According to the police report, Mesa PD said it wouldn’t make the drive to Maricopa just for Bridges. Maricopa police weren’t willing to take him up to Mesa, either.

Bridges was cut loose and the investigation ended abruptly.

“Due to conflicting statements, I was unable to determine a primary aggressor,” wrote MPD Officer Victor Rodriguez.

Bridges was released 45 minutes after he was pulled over. The wife who fell from the car told police she felt safe with Bridges, so the duo left together.

No charges were filed and the case is closed.
