City of Maricopa fire officials say there is no threat to the community after multiple residents reported a strong, gas-like odor lingering across several neighborhoods in recent days.

In a community awareness post yesterday, the City of Maricopa Fire and Medical Department said it received several calls about a pungent smell reported in northeastern neighborhoods including The Lakes, Rancho El Dorado and Homestead.

Fire crews responded to the area and checked with Global Water Resources, the city said. Officials reported there was no leak and no danger to the public. The odor was attributed to ongoing water treatment operations.

Residents who are sensitive to smells were advised to remain indoors until the odor dissipates.

InMaricopa reader Daniel Sanchez said the “horrible smell” has been noticeable for multiple nights and across different parts of the city.

“The last couple of days it smells like burning plastic or just something really, really bad,” Sanchez said. “We noticed it at Fry’s and again in The Lakes at Rancho El Dorado.”

The city’s post prompted dozens of comments from residents describing similar experiences. Several said the odor smelled like sulfur or sewer gas, while others reported noticing it near major corridors including Smith-Enke Road and Honeycutt Road. Some commenters said the smell has been present intermittently for years.

Others questioned whether the odor could be related to sewer infrastructure or natural gas, though city officials did not indicate any such issues and said there was no leak.

As of the city’s statement, no further action was recommended beyond remaining indoors if the odor causes discomfort.
