A 26-year-old woman reported missing in the desert west of Maricopa was found dead this weekend after a multi-day search, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
Family members in Mexico contacted the sheriff’s office Thursday after losing contact with the woman, who had been traveling on foot through the desert, MCSO stated.
According to the sheriff’s office, the woman last communicated with her family Wednesday and told them she was not feeling well. She also reported that the group she had been traveling with had left her behind.
Deputies and search-and-rescue personnel searched the area using coordinates the woman had previously shared with her family but were unable to locate her.
Hikers discovered an unresponsive woman beneath a tree Sunday in a remote desert area near Interstate 8 and Vekol Valley Road, about 23 miles southwest of Maricopa. Deputies responded and confirmed the woman was the same individual reported missing by her family.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
MCSO stated no foul play is suspected at this time. The investigation remains open pending review by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Vekol wash south of the 8. Not a good place go exploring or hiking. This area is dangerous has been for years.
Can’t imagine the level of desperation to make a decision such as this one, and venture into the unknown, into the desert without the notion that you will make it out. A young life is no more.
Risking your life like this in the pursuit of whatever, is something that historians will one day explain to all.
This is a tragedy no question.

She died from exposure if that helps the medical examiner out, anyone reading this article knows what led to this women’s death, she was not on a guided nature walk with friends. No foul play, okay then, the reader is to understand anyone that treks into the desert is responsible for their own actions if they should perish from exposure, the guides (smugglers) or as termed in this article “party she was travelling with” have no responsibility for leaving a member in there group someplace the middle of the desert to die? Is this women similar to say an independent contactor, like in the workplace while participating in this group hike so not responsible for each other in somehow? I’m not sure how leaving someone in the desert to die alone does not in some way constitute some foul play, just wondering about that?
Very sad. Leaving someone behind alone in the blistering desert should face consequences. Humanity is no more.
This is just screaming “illegal” alien … walking in the desert; left behind; no communications; young girl!!! Adds up to illegal women being trafficked or smuggled for prostitution … But I’m sure the city of Maricopa turned it over to ICE – NOT … this city doesn’t follow federal laws and won’t support ICE until “they” need federal help …
Dude. Someone died. Can you *not* right now?
Friggin straight up disrespectful people Magats are, no wonder everyone hates em
Vekol Valley is not in the City of Maricopa, and most of it, including the location the lady was found is not even in Pinal County. That is the reason that Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office did the investigation. The City of Maricopa is in Pinal County, and is quite some distance from, and has no jurisdiction in, the area this took place.
While I won’t get into a debate on Maricopa’s relationship with ICE and the FEDs, I will say you need to work on your reading comprehension. No where in this article is any mention of the City of Maricopa except that the body was found 23 miles southwest of the city. Take a breath. Good Day.
Below examples of reporting by other media sources on this tragedy. Examples in quotes and the source, every media source informs the reader directly that this women was traveling on foot across the border from Mexico. Monica Spencer fails to mention this in her article leaving it up to the reader to determine or guess why and where, reason for travelling with a group across our deserts.
The article in the Arizona Daily Star from Tucson informs its readers directly a very disturbing fact, the woman’s family in Mexico waited an entire day, after being informed that the traveling companions had left her behind, to make a call to the Maricopa County Sheriffs office for assistance. The dead woman’s family left her out in the desert also also according to Arizona Daily Star in Tucson. She (not named at this time) could have been located a day sooner, alive possibly, had her family called when they immediately learned she was in danger, really what were they waiting for? As for the reporting on this illegal crossing, typical InMaricopa coverage of this kind of story, lacking information to meet some agenda, they say they are unbiased reporting, the omissions sure don’t make it seem that way.
